The Grundy Forest Day Loop is perhaps one of the best short hikes in the entire Park. This 2-mile circuit takes in the northernmost section of the famed Fiery Gizzard Trail, and follows both Fiery Gizzard Creek and Little Gizzard Creek for much of its route, with tumbling cascades, several waterfalls and swimming holes along the way. If you wish to continue on, try the 3-mile Sycamore Falls spur that brings you to some interesting geologic formations and waterfalls. Don’t forget your bathing suit to take a dip in the refreshing Sycamore Falls swimming hole!
2.0 mi. total, is accessed from the entry behind the picnic shelter. The first mile of this trail is easy terrain across the Sewanee conglomerate sandstone that covers the plateau. The second mile descends into the head of the gorge and is considered moderate.
The trail also reflects the history of this area. You’ll see old mines, native American hunting shelters, and
maybe even a moonshine still. You’ll even see the creek beside the trail flow in one direction for part of
the hike and in another the remainder. Why is this?
The Sycamore Falls Trail is a moderately difficult 1.6 mile out and back additional spur that begins as you cross the bridge over Little Fiery Gizzard Creek, just before it meets Big Fiery Gizzard Creek.
