A challenging but rewarding full-day, 7-mile out and back hike that involves 3 trails. You'll begin on the Stone Door Trail, then take the Big Creek and Ranger Falls Trails to explore the depths of Big Creek Gulf.

Joe Hobbs was an early resident of Savage Gulf; his cabin is still here and available for reservation.

Laurel Falls

Waterfalls, Day Hikes

A 400-foot stair-stepped spur trail directly behind the Stone Door Ranger Station that leads down to Laurel Falls and the site of an old mill. This 0.3 mile loop trail, part of which follows a very old, historic road, will return to you to the Ranger Station at its end.

Centrally located in the bottom of Savage Gulf, the Sawmill Campground can be accessed from three different trailheads.

Stagecoach Road Campground

Located at the junction of the Savage Creek and Collins River gorges, the Stagecoach Road area is gorgeous

Be prepared for your hike! Know when the sun will set, and make sure you bring along these essentials...

Overlooks

Many overlooks do not have protective barriers. Keep a close eye on children and be careful!

Waterfalls

Be careful climbing near waterfalls as rocks can be slippery! NEVER jump off falls or elevated rocks into plunge pools. Exposed rocks appearing wet and “black” are extremely slick with algae. Avoid them!  Flows vary by season, with spring and fall typically having the heaviest.

Getting There

Take TN Highway 56 north from Tracy City, through Altamont to Beeersheba Springs (about 20 miles). Look for the large brown park sign, then turn right on Stone Door Road. Follow Stone Door Road about 1.5 miles, out to its end at the Stone Door Ranger Station parking area.
